MCLS GUIDELINES

These guidelines are designed to make MCLS an effective, fun and safe learning place.

Most of them are derived from common sense and MCLS experience over the years. We sincerely ask MCLS community members follow these guidelines when conducting MCLS activities. These guidelines are open for discussion. Please send any suggestions and comments to the board (board@mcls-wisc.org).

For Students:

The MCLS is a place for learning. Although it is an extra curriculum program, to make it a fun, enjoyable and knowledge enrichment place we expect our students:

  • Come to classes on time.
  • Pay attention to teachers, staff and parents on duty.
  • Respect teachers and fellow students.
  • Actively participate in classes.
  • Do not run off to the streets or make loud noise during recesses.
  • Respect the facilities on the premise.
  • Finish homework assignments.

For Teachers :

As the MCLS is a non-profit organization, the pay it could afford to teachers may be far from enough to compensate the effort you put into each class. Most teachers donate a significant amount of time in return for the fulfillment in promoting the Chinese culture. The students, parents and board members greatly appreciate it. The following is what we expect from our teachers:

  • Provide a syllabus for the class you are teaching.
  • Be prepared for classes.
  • Be punctual. Check in with the staff before class. Fifteen minutes late for a class may result in an hour without pay.
  • Record and maintain a student attendance sheet.
  • Assign homework if necessary. The school meets only once a week. Homework becomes a more important vehicle for learning.
  • Give two tests (mid-term and final) in each semester for Chinese and Math. For other courses teachers may decide accordingly.
  • Communicate with parents for students’ needs, progress or behavior issues. Contact the board (board@mcls-wisc.org) if an issue could not be resolved between you, students and parents.
  • Work with students to give a performance or an exhibit at the end of the semester (usually the fall semester).
  • If for any reason you can’t teach a class temporarily, you are responsible for finding a substitute teacher and inform the board (board@mcls-wisc.org) at least one week before the class. In the event that you are unable to find a substitute in your absence, please notify the MCLS board at least two weeks before the class.
  • You are not to resign from your teaching position in the middle of the semester unless you are moving out of town or there is a special reason accepted by the board. In that case a written notification to the school board is required at least two weeks in advance. The MCLS reserves its right to terminate the teaching agreement if an inappropriate behavior occurs or if the quality of the teaching is compromised.
  • Return the textbooks at the end of the school year as they are provided to you for teaching purposes and considered the school’s properties. If you resign earlier, return the books on the last day of your teaching at MCLS.

For Parents:

The students, teachers, school board and parents together form the MCLS community. To make the MCLS a success, parents’ involvement is crucial. We expect the parents:

  • Bring children to school on time and pick them up after classes.
  • Make sure children understand the school’s Guidelines For Students.
  • Make sure children finish home assignments.
  • Communicate with teachers and the board about issues related to learning progress, students’ needs, teaching quality, school operation, as well as suggestions for any improvements. Send your comments and suggestions to board@mcls-wisc.org.
  • Actively participate in school-organized activities such as teacher/parent meetings, school meetings, picnics and parties.
